#8 – Learning Poker Strategy

Where can I learn about poker?

There is tons and tons of poker strategy content all over the internet and it is very hard for a beginner to differentiate between the good and the bad. There are some ways to pick out the good poker strategy websites.  You should be able to find everything you need to know to win lots of money from the following resources, because that’s how I did it when I rose up the ranks.  That should be enough to beat 2nl. To become successful at poker, you will need to constantly absorb new information, so definitely don’t just rely on my site.

Here are some free sites that have solid poker strategy advice:

Ed Miller’s blog

First Time Poker Player

Here are poker training sites that you pay a subscription for:

BlueFirePoker

Cardrunners

DeucesCracked (I used to work here. You can find videos I made under the name ‘mdm13′)

LeggoPoker

I would recommend holding off on paying for these until you are familiar with online poker slang and have some playing experience. These sites are very good, but are best for players who are already winning players and are trying to move up from micro/small stakes. If you sign up for rakeback through me, you will receive a free month of DeucesCracked for every month you rake 500 dollars or more. Training sites often have free strategy forums that are worth a look because they have less noise than the major poker forums.

Be wary of bad advice on the forums if you post a hand for analysis. Give the most weight to advice provided by players who play higher stakes than you do and give thoughtful analysis to the problem at hand. Read the “sticky” posts at the top of forums before posting, a lot of times these threads will have the answer to your questions and will save you from getting called mean names. There is often strategy content in the sticky posts and while some of it is outdated they are still good resources for a beginner. To start you off here is the TwoPlusTwo Beginners Forum frequently asked questions.

Can I play now?

Yup! If you have diligently followed the previous advice (especially learning strategy) you are now miles ahead of others blindly clawing for poker success. Remember to avoid the beginner mistakes described on the next page. Good luck!
